Mass. mom says mystery metal object slammed into her car on I-93 in Medford

Windshield Shattered by Mysterious Metal Object on Massachusetts Highway

A Massachusetts mother and her young daughter experienced a terrifying ordeal on their morning commute when a metal object suddenly crashed through their car's windshield on Interstate 93 in Medford. The incident left the vehicle severely damaged, but thankfully, the occupants emerged unharmed, shaken but relieved to have survived the harrowing experience.

Unexpected Danger on the Highway

A Routine Commute Turns Chaotic

Viviana Peritore, a 3-year-old girl, was excited to accompany her mother, Ivana Peritore, to work in Somerville on that fateful Friday morning. Little did they know that their routine commute would soon take a terrifying turn. As they were driving along the far left lane of I-93 South, a massive piece of metal seemingly materialized out of nowhere and smashed into their windshield, shattering the glass and causing significant damage to the vehicle.

A Harrowing Ordeal

Ivana Peritore, the mother, described the incident as a truly frightening experience. "I've been crying the whole time and I've been covering my hair, but I'm OK," she said, recounting the traumatic event. Peritore had to keep driving to reach a safe spot to call for help, all while the metal object continued to wreak havoc on her car, bouncing off the hood, windshield, and eventually sliding across the roof.

A Miraculous Escape

Despite the severity of the impact, Peritore is grateful that the metal object first hit the hood of her car, which she believes helped to slow the impact and potentially save her and her daughter from more serious harm. "I'm very grateful at this point that it did hit the hood of my car first because it kind of almost slow slowed down the impact," she explained.

A Shared Sigh of Relief

Viviana, the young daughter, displayed remarkable resilience in the face of the terrifying ordeal. "It was just an accident," she calmly explained, showcasing her ability to process the traumatic event. Ivana Peritore, the relieved mother, expressed her gratitude that her daughter emerged unharmed, stating, "I'm just happy she's OK. I didn't care about the car at all. I could care less what the car looked like. I just continued to envision like what if this happened differently."

A Lingering Mystery

The incident has left authorities and the public alike puzzled about the origin of the mysterious metal object. NBC10 Boston reached out to both state and local police, but they have yet to provide any information about the source of the debris. The question remains: what was this metal object, and where did it come from? As the investigation continues, the Peritores and the other affected driver can only be thankful that the situation did not end in tragedy.
